Dechenphu Monastery

The Dechenphu Monastery is one of the holiest places in the Thimphu valley. The Monastery s dedicated to GyenyenJagpaMilen, the protector diety of the Thiphu valley, Dechenphu or the cave of consummate bliss Monastery is located at the northern end of the Thimphu valley.  To reach DechenphuLhakhang on must undertake a short climb up a stone staircase  upto an elevation of approximately 8725ft. The imposing tall, red goenkhang (chapel) is dedicated to the powerful deity Gyenyen, is said to be able to supply weaponry for an endless number of soldiers.

The deity is highly revered by the local people and hundreds of visitors flock to this shrine of gain the deity ’s blessing. The temple is visited by students seeking the pass examinations, archers and sportsmen looking to win a competition, by farmers seeking a bountiful harvest and even government officials go to seek the deity’s blessings when making important policy decisions.  The monastery underwent an extensive redevelopment in 2005 as a part of the centenary celebrations and was consecrated in December 2008 by the Je Khempo in the presence of the 4th king His Majesty Jigme Singye Wangchuck. Apart from the restoration of the shrine the temple complex was expanded. The Guru Lhakahang or the monk residences were also renovated. Some new statues were also added to the temple including a 6 foot gold statue of Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal.
